The difference between resin bound done well and done once.

Resin bound is what most people picture when they say "resin drive". Pre-mixed with resin in a paddle mixer, troweled 18mm thick, cured to a smooth seamless finish. It's the gold-standard modern surface.

But there are rules. Aliphatic UV-stable resin only. Forced-action mixer only. Dry aggregate only. Temperature 8–25°C only. Skilled trowel only. Miss any of those and the drive is already compromised the day it's laid.

What makes a resin bound drive last 20 years

Three things — and only three. Miss one, it fails early.

  1. The base. Resin bound is only as good as what's under it. We lay open-graded permeable tarmac as standard — it lets water through, bonds perfectly to resin, flex-matches the topcoat. Anything else is a compromise.
  2. The resin. UV-stable aliphatic resin (e.g. Addastone, Sureset, Daltex premium). Not the £5/kg aromatic trade-pack stuff that yellows in six months.
  3. The hands. Resin cures in 20 minutes. There's no time to figure it out. We run two experienced trowellers on every job — one leading, one cutting edges.

The short version: unless you have a specific grip or cost reason to choose bonded, bound is the better surface.

Aggregate options we stock

  • Autumn Gold · Silver Forest · Cornish Blue · Dalmatian · Chestnut · Oyster · Bronze Beach · Terracotta · Arctic White · Silver Pearl · Rainbow · Titanium

All natural stone, kiln-dried, 1–3mm or 2–5mm sizing. We'll mock up a 1m² sample on site before lay-day so you can see it in your actual daylight.

What the 15-year guarantee covers

  • UV discolouration
  • Surface de-bonding
  • Base failure
  • Edge lifting
  • Cracking
  • Drainage performance

Most-asked question on resin bound:

"Can I get the look of resin bound for cheaper?" — Yes, sort of. You'd go resin bonded (rougher finish), or tar & chip (similar-ish aesthetic at 60% of the cost). We'll talk you through the trade-offs honestly on the quote visit.

Why builders and architects specify resin bound on new homes

Two reasons: (1) it's SUDS-compliant without any additional drainage engineering — which means planning applications go through faster; (2) it looks high-end without the cost of imported porcelain or granite.

We work with developers across Elton — phased installs on new estates, adoption-standard specs, signed-off drainage compliance. Contact us for developer-rate pricing.

Common questions

About Resin Bound.

Is resin bound really SUDS compliant?
Yes — as long as it's laid over a permeable base (open-graded tarmac or free-draining hardcore). We install that way every time, so you get full SUDS compliance and no planning permission needed for new front drives.
What temperature does resin bound need to cure?
8–25°C ambient. Below 5°C it won't fully cross-link and will stay tacky. Above 28°C it flashes off before you can trowel. We work March to November typically, scheduled around weather.
Is resin bound slippery when wet?
No — the stone aggregate provides natural grip even in rain. Bonded (scatter-stone) is marginally grippier but bound is fine for all domestic and most commercial uses. Anti-slip additive can be added for steep gradients.
What's the lifespan of resin bound?
Properly laid: 20+ years. We've got our own installs going strong at 18 years and counting. 15-year guarantee on workmanship, manufacturer warranty on resin typically 10–15 years layered on top.
Can I walk on it the day after?
Yes — foot traffic is fine after 8–12 hours. Vehicles from 24 hours (small cars) to 48 hours (larger vehicles). We leave you a clear aftercare sheet on the day.
What about oil stains?
Oil sits on the surface (doesn't soak in) so it cleans up quickly with degreaser and a pressure wash. Not a big deal on resin bound.
